Welcome
Founded by six alumnae in 1996, our association has grown to 175 members. Our main objective is to promote fellowship among former students. In keeping with the Maryknoll spirit of giving and charity, we also participate in and support various charitable events, and we also raise funds for our retired Maryknoll Sisters.

Maryknoll Sisters Film Project - "Trailblazers in Habits"
The alumni is supporting the film project produced by Fish Tail Soup Inc., Hong Kong. Nancy Tong (Yr of 71) is the producer. This film will focus on a few aspects, the Lives of the Maryknoll Sisters starting from the days when they arrive in Hong Kong in the 20's till the present date. Besides that, the film will intertwine other aspects, the social and political history of Hong Kong, focusing the Sisters' challenges in the Chinese culture but under the Bristish Ruling.
"The filming is almost complete. Nancy Tong and her camera men are in HK this week but will leaving next Thursday to return to NYC. She would have loved to film the get-to-gether of the the '56er on Friday or at least to meet the ladies. The purpose of this week's filming in HK is to film the 100th anniversary celebration of the MK Hospital in Wong Tai Sin. She has obtained consent from some retirees from the hospital and will be filming them in the next couple of days. They will talk about their work with the Sisters. Whilst Nancy is in town, she will continue to try to interview more Sisters in HK, as the film will be about their contribution to education , hospital work and social work.
Editing of earlier filmed footage has begun in NY, hence the need for Nancy to rush back to work alongside the editor. Simultaneously, we are looking into finding a few of Hollywood's well respected actresses (e.g. Susan Sarandon, Vanessa Redgrave, Sandra Bullock, etc.) to help us with the reading of some of the Sisters' diaries, as a voice over for the film. There is no telling which actresses would agree to work with us (and not be paid). My fingers and toes crossed.
Reason for reaching out to Hollywood is to find a way to further raise the film's profile to maximize future income generated by this film. We plan to submit this film to next year's international film festivals, probably under the category of "documentary films".
The post-production work would likely go till end of next spring, hopefully sooner. We should have our first cut ready by then. We would like to have a premier gala showing of the film in several cities, HK, NY, LA, Toronto, Vancouver, etc. This will be a fun evening when hopefully many of us will gather together to help celebrate our Sisters' work. We would like to invite our Sisters to attend and be of special guests of honor. Lots to plan ahead and I am going to once again, rally support from all the alum chapters in North America to help with this special evening.

Motherhouse
Thanks to generous donations from members, we sent USD 60,000 in 2009, USD2,000 in June 2010 and USD15,500 in May 2011 with fund raised at Gala in April 2011, and to Motherhouse.

There was a Christmas party at the Maryknoll Residential Care facility this afternoon and I visited with Srs. Miriam Xavier, Rose Duchesne and Corinne. Sr. Miriam Xavier was actually still in bed because she had had a touch of the stomach flu this morning but was feeling better by the time I saw her. She is 98 years young and her mind and memory for things past and current are incredible. She visits Sr. Corinne daily to help her pass the time.
Sr. Corinne's health is fragile but she is holding her own. She is now 93. Sr. Rose Duchesne is adjusting to life back at the convent and is as gracious as ever. As you see from the photo, she now wears her hair short and wavy.
As an update, there are now 5 alums from the New York group who will be attending the opening Mass on January 8. If any one else can come, be sure to RSVP as soon as you can.

November 12 (Sat.) MCS AGM recaps:
The Maryknoll Convent School Alumni (B.C.) Association held its Annual General Meeting on Saturday, November 12, 2011, and what a full day it was. We had our usual election of Committee members, followed by a very interesting and informative presentation on Alzheimer’s disease by Mr. Anthony L. Kupferschmidt, Support and Education Coordinator with the Alzheimer Society of B.C.
After a delicious dim sum at lunchtime, we gathered again to record ‘Be Not Afraid’, which will be part of the MCS Virtual Choir. Janice Chui and a few other musical Maryknollers led us through recording the song and the videotaping. What a nice way to end a very successful day. Thank you everyone for your support and participation.

Maryknoll Convent School
On February 6th, 2010, the 20-meter "ghost tree", of Maryknoll Convent School was cut down, as it is beyond saving after a botched drainage work, the school said. The school management said its main roots have been severely and irreparably damaged by the contractor after recent drainage renovation work.
The 71-year-old Northfolk Island pine was proned to collapse, the school said, based on two expert reports that its soil structure had been altered and damaged.
Sister Jeanne Houlihan, an administrator for Maryknoll Sisters in the China Region, said it was a difficult decision to make. "We love this tree, but we love our students more. Our prime concern is the safety of the public, students and staff," she said.
School supervisor Helen Yu Lai Ching-ping, an alumnus of the school, explained that they have considered emergency stabilization work on the tree but believed this was not a long-term option. Yu said a new tree will be planted on Feb 19.
Let’s bid farewell to part of our heritage!!
